Salzburg Austria – Country++
I took a train down from Munich to Salzburg for a slight detour from the direction in which I was headed. By this time I had decided to meet some of my California friends in Iceland and needed to make my way to Berlin for a flight in a few weeks, but Jasmine suggested I head to Salzburg for a few days to check out Austria and I agreed with her. I arrived on a train pretty late in the day so basically only had time to find some food and then hit the sack. Not much to report on this day. I guess I will say that I had never seen the Sound of Music, so I watched it one afternoon when I was in Munich in order to prepare myself for the onslaught of “This was filmed here”, “this was filmed there” since it took place there. The first morning I tried to go for a nice long run including some hills, but the weather had really started to turn colder and since I had gotten up early to get a good start to the day, it was pretty chilly and I really had trouble breathing.
It still provided beautiful views which i made sure to soak in! After returning to the Hostel a bit earlier than expected I spent the remainder of the morning wandering the streets.
I went to the Mozart house which is the house where Mozart grew up and enjoyed the museum there.
I then enjoyed some of the gardens and walked along the river.
The architecture was beautiful and there is a nice river traversing the middle of the city and a mountain cliff on the one side that creates a sort of valley around the city. It was great for walking around and eventually I made my way up to the top of the hill for the views and a little hike and chill.
First though, I did a bit more exploring of the church and streets across the river.
The church was really nice both outside and in.
We went up to the hill and the views on the other side of the city of the mountains was amazing. I really enjoyed myself up there and spent a lot of time just relaxing and enjoying the view.
You can see a house used in the sound of music up on the hill as well.
Just loved the architecture and how it was built into the country side.
Eventually I made my way to one of the breweries in town for a much needed meal and break.
It was started by monks in the region and is super old. I liked their beer delivery too, it was all from Barrels and there was a watching station to rinse your cup before and after you drink your beer.
I met an older american group who were travelling by van around Europe and chatted with them for a while. It was pretty chill. Everything there was chash only though and i had run out of cash so only had enough for some beer. Therefore I needed to find some food still. Luckily the Stiegl brewery was only a 30 minute walk away.
The brewery was pretty and they had a decent selection of various types of Stiegl i have never seen before, but they ALLOWED SMOKING INSIDE which ruined the whole experience. Luckily there were only a few people in the place at the time so it wasn’t that bad, but it was really annoying to sit in there with all the smoke around.
I had a great meal to refuel myself after a LOT of walking that day. I started the long walk back to the hostel which was actually almost an hour away by that point. I threw on a podcast and everything was hunky dory.
Upon returning to the hostel there were a few Aussi guys playing cards, so i decided to join them for a evening of chill.
The next morning, I went for another adventure walk and the square right around the corner from the Hostel had a farmers market. I wandered around the farmers market and kept an eye out for the thing that all of the locals were eating. One of them was a tomato soup.
I then continued my walk and saw that everyone was eating what looked like fried chicken, so i got some of that as well. It was all very homy and delicious.
There were beutiful gardens and great views of the city to be had.
I went back up on the hill looking over the mountains and spent a decent amount of time reading my book with a great view.
When I returned to the city I found out that there was a soccer match that day and the Irish supporters were in full strength in the streets, chanting, cheering and drinking.
The police were ready to move in but were more or less letting things go for now.
And after a nice relaxing wander, I headed back to the hostel and then to the bus station where I jumped on a bus back to Miunich for one more night before moving on to my next destination. Nuremberg.
I had to say goodbye to Jasmine for another 2 years.
